"MOTHER KNOWS BEST!"

Readings: Jeremiah 18:18-20; Matthew 20:17-18

Mothers always want the best for their children. Or at least what they think is the best. The mother of the Apostles James and John was no different. She boldly went up to Jesus and requested, “Promise me that these sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and the other at your left, in your kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “You do not know what you are asking.”

She sure didn’t. Little did she realize that to be that close to Jesus would put them through a lot of mental and physical pain and suffering. They would have to experience a lot of things she wouldn’t really want them to experience. If she could have looked into the future and seen the consequences of her request, she probably would have kept her mouth shut. She might have even discouraged her sons from associating with Jesus.

Mothers should first and always pray that their children live according to the will of God and trust them in his hands. He loves them more than any mother can. Mothers should then try to teach their children how to live lives of concern for others. They shouldn’t nag them about this nor always be criticizing, but with a few words and a lot of example their children can be taught.

Jesus said, “Anyone who aspires to greatness must serve the rest, whoever wants to rank first must serve the needs of all.” Whether your children become rich or famous or successful in this world is not of prime importance. It is their service to others. I think the mother of James and John must have taught them well. They gave their lives for all of us, and now live with Christ.
