"THEY DIDN'T RECOGNIZE HIM"

Easter Wednesday
Gospel Reading: Luke 24:13-35

We are told that when Jesus joined the two disciples on the road to Emmaus they were restrained from recognizing him. That seems odd, doesn’t it? Why wouldn’t Jesus want them to know who he was right off? It seems to have been done for their good.

Instead of letting them become all excited at his presence and being too emotional and unable to think clearly, Jesus gave them the opportunity to let them voice their disappointment over all the events that took place the past few days. He then led them through certain passages of their Scriptures, our Old Testament, explaining how they all related to this Messiah they were talking about. He helped them to grow in understanding the events in order to strengthen their faith.

It was for their own good that they did not recognize Jesus right off. First they needed to understand more about him. Then, when they were more solidly established in faith, they were allowed to recognize him in the breaking of the bread, the Mass.

When you are disappointed by events in your life, keep this story in mind. God is trying to teach you something to help you grow and mature. Soon enough he will reveal his part in the events. Soon enough he will let you see that all that happens is for your good. Continue to trust Jesus. The time will Come when you will see clearly that he has always been with you.
