"THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY"

Reading: Luke 1:39-56

Today we celebrate the Second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary: The Visitation. For us to understand the mental condition of Mary at this time would be impossible.

The Angel Gabriel had appeared to her and told her of God’s plan. Her permission was requested. It was given. The Holy Spirit came upon her; Jesus was conceived; the Son of God became Man. Gabriel informed Mary that her cousin Elizabeth, though up in years, had conceived a child also.

Mary must have been very confused. What was she going to tell her parents? How was she going to explain to Joseph, her fiancĂ©? What would people think? We don’t know whether she spoke about her condition to anyone. But, undoubtedly, with her parent’s approval – she went off to visit Elizabeth and help her during the last three months before the birth of John the Baptist.

When Mary arrived, we find that Elizabeth knew of Mary’s condition. “Blessed are you among women,” she said to Mary, “and blessed is the fruit of your womb...Blessed is she who trusted that the Lord’s words to her would be fulfilled.”

Mary remained there about three months before returning home. Those must have been trying times for Mary. We aren’t the only ones who have them. Even the mother of God was not immune. All you need to do is ask, when problems arise, and Mary will help you through them. If anyone is compassionate, she is. Never hesitate to pray to Mary! She invites your mental visitations to her at any time.
