Matthew 5:20-26
There is a lot of anger in the world today - a lot of abusive language, a lot of hate, a lot of killing, a lot of murder. And as long as anger continues there will be wars, there will be division among people. The reason Jesus came was to unite us to God and in God to each other. That just is not going to happen anytime soon for many people in this world because of the lack of love, because of the lack of patience that is required by love.
What you and I can do is try to be more patient with those we live with and deal with every day. It is probably much harder to be patient with those in our own households than with those of someone else’s. We sort of relax and maybe let our guard down when we are home. And if it is really only a guard we have up in order to appear patient and understanding of other people, then our conduct at home reveals to us what we are really like inside.
Do you have the reputation of being very nice to people you only meet occasionally, with the person at the check-out counter and the post office? Do you even get along fairly well with those you work with? But then when you get home do you show your true colors by how you treat your husband, or wife, or children, or your dog and cat? Jesus came to draw us together. Are we helping him, or making his job harder? Let’s all take a look and see.
