"SOME SINFUL ACTIONS REMAIN UNNOTICED"

Readings: Ezra 47:1-9, 12; John 5:1-16

There are some things worse than sickness. There are some things worse than being disabled, than getting even cancer or AIDS. Sin is worse than all of those and everything else combined. But we usually don’t look at it that way, do we?
The immediate experience of a disability or disease seems like the worse thing in the world to us. And we might tend to think the effects of our sins won’t come until we enter eternity. We are wrong!

Sin can affect our souls, our minds and our bodies, right here and now. The effects of original sin will last till the end of time. They have already been unleashed. But we have in us the power not to add to the misery. When we sin we open the door wider for misfortune to enter. When one person mugs or rapes another, when one person hates or murders another, terrible results are obvious. But for a large part the effects of many of our sinful actions remain unnoticed to us.

Sin is any deliberate thought, word, or action contrary to our nature. It affects our souls, our minds, eventually our bodies. Some sicknesses, maybe many, can be caused by our own sins. This man Jesus cured at the pool of Bethesda. Jesus said to him, “Remember now, you have been cured. Give up your sins so that something worse may not overtake you.” Giving up sin is not only good for your spiritual health, but also for your physical.
