Reading: Acts 5:34- 42
That was good advice. It came from a man called Gamaliel who was using the best source of human wisdom - common sense. The Jewish leaders had had more than enough of this Jesus talk. They thought they had done away with him and his teachings, but now his followers were going around preaching he had risen from the dead and making matters worse. Many people believed the apostles and became followers of a crucified man they were calling the Messiah.
Gamaliel told the Jewish authorities not to get all worked up over it. Others had claimed to be the Messiah. But when they died, their followers dispersed. Eventually, the same would happen to Jesus and his followers if it were all a lie.
“Let the apostles alone,” he told the members of the Sanhedrin. “If their purpose or activity is human in its origins it will destroy itself. If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them without fighting God himself.” I call that, “USING HIS NOODLE.”
Gamaliel was only using common sense. No one can fight heaven’s city hail and win. There are things in our lives that we might put a lot of energy into eradicating. If God sees those things are best for us, he is not going to remove them, whether they be temptations, physical or financial or social ailments, or what. We shouldn’t get worked up so much. God is in charge; he will make everything work out. The Jewish leaders still decided to have the apostles flogged. They just didn’t seem to have Gamaliel’s common sense.
