Don’t feel bad because you can’t do everything. It seems that no matter how much we do, there is always more to be done. And if we let it get to us, we will go to bed every night feeling guilty that we haven’t done enough.
The apostles were busy every day, all day, and, I imagine, far into the night. What did they get for it? Complaints! Some of the people complained they were being neglected. We are told that the Christians “who spoke Greek complained that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food, as compared with the widows of those who spoke Hebrew.” Did the apostles let themselves feel bad about it? Of course! But they had sense enough to realize that even they had limits to what they could do. So, instead of squeezing more into their already overly—crowded schedules, they selected other responsible people for the job.
“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on the tables,” agreed the apostles. “Look around among your own number, brothers, for seven men acknowledged to be deeply spiritual and prudent, and we shall appoint them to this task. This will permit us to concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the word.” Everyone is to share the work. No one person can do it all. Try to do your share well, and get a good night’s sleep.
