Reading: John 14:7—14
People wonder why God doesn’t reveal himself more clearly? Why doesn’t he come right down, stand in front of us, perform some gigantic miracles and prove his existence? He has already done that and most of the world did not accept it.
God came to us as a human being, not only stood in front of us but lived with us for thirty odd years, performed miracles galore, even rose from the dead. What were the results? Only a handful of people believed it. “Show us the Father,” Philip told Jesus. And Jesus replied, “Philip, after I have been with you all this time, you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”
If God were to appear to us as he is in himself, we would not be able to bear it. It would be worse than looking directly at the sun during an eclipse, or at any other time. More would happen to us than merely going blind. God has revealed himself to us as much as we are able to take. For our good he can go no further. He has proved not only his existence but his love for us. Now it is our turn to reveal ourselves to him, and prove whether we really believe in him and love him - or not.
