What if Paul and Silas had been left in chains by God and the prison doors left locked? They would still have been free. Whoever believes in Jesus Christ, though a prisoner in body, is free in spirit. No chains can hold our souls, no doors can lock us in prison if we believe in and have confidence in Jesus Christ. There are times we might find it very helpful to remember that.
There are times in life we might find ourselves like in prison. A bad situation at home that there is no easy solution for, an onerous job that we can’t afford to leave, our debts have gotten out of hand, a bad friendship, an abusive relationship, or we are literally in jail by decree of the law. Though these involve not only our bodies but also affect us psychologically, the measure of our faith and trust in God determines the freedom of our souls.
Paul and Silas were thrown in jail, we are told they were put in “maximum security, going so far as to have their feet chained to a stake. About midnight, while they were praying and singing hymns to God as their fellow prisoners listened, a sever earth-quake shook the place, rocking the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and everyone’s chains were pulled loose.”What if this had not happened? They still would have been free. They trusted in Christ. Let us never neglect to do the same.
